And now UK courts term Tier-1 cap as unlawful

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12022613

The temporary cap on Tier-1 applications from outside EU (for highly skilled immigrants) enforced by UK Deptt of Home Affairs in July 2010 has been deemed unlawful by the courts.

This had made, the already chaotic immigration system, more chaotic. As the report suggests, some of the policies are being put into place just for the sake of doing something.

I hope the Tier-1 - PSW visa does not get scrapped.

Another Ranking - 5 Palms ...

http://www.eduniversal-ranking.com/business-school-university-ranking-5palms.html

Cranfield is placed at no 46 in this ranking. This ranking is for 'Business Schools with major international influence'.

The criteria for this ranking is a simple question asked to deans or directors of 1000 top academic instutes over the world - 'Which business school(s) would you recommend to anyone wishing to study in this country?". The rankings also depend on the level of International recognition through accreditations, memberships and other rankings.

Interesting to note is that IIMs show up here. IIMB at 25 and IIMA at 52. IIMB has been India's no 1 in this list since the last three years. (Source : click here)

And now its 'Tier-1 PSW' that might go !

UK Immigration Ministry, as a major drive to keep limits on immigration has now decided to close the Tier-1 PSW as well. Reason for the same is that more students using this criteria are doing lower-than-degree level courses and are not so-highly-skilled as they should be.

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsarticles/2010/dec/16student-visa-system

Now, its upto the schools to sit down and decide whether its the right decision.

Scrapping the PSW will mean disaster to me, and to the other students from outside EU who want to work in the UK post MBA. I hope, (against any hope), that the PSW gets changed to allow post-graduates to work, which will include us :)

In extreme cases, will have to go back to India, which might not be that bad. I believe whatever happens happens for good. Will keep my fiingers crossed though..

Friday night parties - contd...

Here is an account of what happened tonight/this night ... Some details are missing and fuzzy ...

It was Subhash's birthday party, this weekend, and we just needed a reason to party !!! And so we gathered at our favourite place - Kitchen at 4th floor - 5th block - stringfellow. After a round of drinks, and pole dance by Subhash, we moved to the CSA.

As we reached it was 1.30 already and the CSA did not allow us in, bar closed and time to shut. Damn it !! We needed some more party. Soon started the snow-fight with everyone throwing snow flakes at everyone else, random, excited and all drunk - mostly coming out of CSA, some frustrated at CSA getting closed this early at 2 !

We reached stringfellow where I broke a big snowman, had more snow fights and then moved to Sumant's kitchen for the final round.

We had unending discussions on something or the other with Nikolas - the german - and I remember breaking a glass as well. We also made sausages and ate a lot of them over wine and vodka.

Finally, the party ended at 5, with Sumant doing the cleaning as usual ;)  - Sorry Sumant, owe you a big one for this.

Tier 1 to be abolished ?

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsarticles/2010/nov/78-first-annual-limit

http://www.1stcontactenews.co.uk/featured-news/goodbye-tier-1/
According to the latest new available from ukba , UK is now limiting the number of Tier-1 visas to 1000 from April 2011. The number of people under  Tier 2 (General) visa will be capped at 20,700,and they will be able to stay in the UK for a maximum of 5 years ( provided their yearly salary is atleast 40K GBP)

This seems like moving to a visa/immigration system like one in the US.

The number of visa applications is going to rise in the next few month for sure.

Accounting WAC : Video

Here is the feeling of our cohort after getting the accounting WAC. As usual, there was a duration of 24 hours in which to turn in the written assessment of a case (WAC).

Exciting times and I really enjoyed the case and the time we had while discussing and writing it.

First WAC - impressions

Written Assessment of a Case - commonly known as WAC in Cranfield parlance got over last weekend, and I must say it was fun.

It was handed over to us at 4 pm on Friday, and you had to be here to see the motions people were going through.

I managed to capture a video and a few reactions.

Test your imagination! (via Richard Wiseman's Blog)

Found an amazing post on Richard Wiseman's blog. Nice collection of creative pictures. Just amazed to see how the human eye can perceive something out of nothing.

Test your imagination! Today  people all around the world will be celebrating the genius that was Martin Gardner.  Go here to see if there is an event in your area.  I will be staging a short Gathering for Gardner event in Edinburgh tonight, just prior to Edinburgh Skeptics in the Pub at 7.30.  Venue details here. Here are three lovely examples of our amazing ability to see nonexistent faces and bodies in stuff ..... What do you think?  Which is your favourite?   … Read More

About Cranfield MBA ...

A lot of people have asked me recently about how is it at Cranfield, and how life is when you join an MBA.

I am giving a shot to answer a few questions here.

Q> How is life at Cranfield

A> Cool ! I must say, and I have enjoyed every bit of it as of now. The pressure kicks in from day 1, but you get used to it. You learn to pace things up, and also learn to prioritise. Also you know how to be efficient when learning in teams.

Q> How is education/quality of curriculum.

A> World Class ! The professors are aweeeesoooommmmeeee.. About the curriculum, do have a look at our school website and see if it suffices any of your requirements.

Q>How is the post MBA job scenario in UK ?

A>Its quite dim. But it depends on person to person. Do see my earlier posts on "Getting a job in UK post MBA" and others to know more.

Q> What if I want to return to India after MBA ?

A> Not an issue. Many people have done that. Only thing is getting a good paying job to pay off the loan, otherwise not much an issue, as we do have good job market in India. But, if you want to go back to India, better do an MBA in India, from some reputed institute... as Cranfield is virtually unknown in India.

Q> I have x years of experience, do I qualify.

A> Let me answer it straight, if x<5, dont even think about it. If its more than 5, do write to the adcom and have your profile evaluated. Or email me, I could help. (for free !)

Q> US or UK ?

A> Deciding between US and UK schools

One year MBAs - The way to go in India ?

Read this article by professors at IIM Bangalore - http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/articleshow/6806670.cms

The professors believe that the one year MBA is the way to go to save investment in terms of time and money for students, and also for the b-schools which can save enormously and instead invest the amount in increasing intake.

I agree that the average intake in IIMs, at 2000 per year is very low, and also that we will run out of quality faculties sooner rather than later.

But a lot has to be thought before putting the one year course in action, like for example the mindset of students and parents (yes, parents who play a BIG role in so called career directing the ward) and the society in general (recruiters etc).

A lot of one year courses have come up in the recent past, ISB , Great Lakes being couple of them. Once the market sees the real value, there will be more such colleges for sure in the future.

Getting a job after MBA in the UK

We had a career workshop on 'Own Job Search' during and after the MBA at Cranfield. It was organized by AMBA. It was a very helpful session and one of the highlights of how well we are looked after by our career services.

There were some key takeaways for me from this workshop.

1. Recruitment in UK is different than how it happens in the US, Asia or elsewhere. Companies don't necessarily visit the campus. The reason is simple - not enough candidates to interview for the number of open positions. Say a FMCG or Automobile company needs to recruit 3 MBAs this year. They will ideally want to interview at least 60-70(I may be stating less) suitable candidates before deciding on those 3, and in a typical class of MBA in UK there are not always (almost always) so many students suited for one opening. Hence companies prefer MBAs writing to them, rather than wasting their money and time in doing campus visits.

2. Its difficult to change anything more than one out of Country, Industry and Function when looking for the first post-MBA job. Except if its a leadership development program or if you are lucky. I kind of agree to it, but not fully.

3. Networking, Alumni, etc are the most suitable ways of getting to know the openings in a company. Any contact to the recruiter must go via these contacts, else its viewed as a 'cold call' (Sales term), and is not excepted to generate any response.

4. When it comes to contacting alumni or other contacts for leads, one must take care of the diversity and cultural aspect of communications and etiquetes. Like writing  a polite email first before directly asking for a job/contact. Asking for 15 minutes of personal time to seek 'advise', and using that time effectively if and when you get to meet. Meeting should be focused on 3 things - 'Is my profile a match for your company - advise', 'Is the company hiring, in general, or in particular', 'Whom to get in touch with'. And depending on the response you get asking,in the end - 'If I can use your name while contacting so and so...' (Directly not asking for whether you can give his 'reference', which might mean official/formal).

5. Taking one step at a time - Knowing the function/sector you want to join is very important. Once this is decided, one must make efforts to get contacts, and then prepare CV to match the company and then apply. Also, take into consideration the time taken to apply and interview calls to appear in your inbox. It takes time, especially in the UK. One has to be patient, and sometimes it takes 6-9 months to get the first job. Starting early is always the good option to avoid disappointment after MBA.

India EU trade deal : in view of immigration

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/business/india-business/India-EU-trade-deal-may-nullify-UK-migration-cap/articleshow/6719964.cms

Quote from the article -

"India has insisted on increased mobility for its skilled workers in return for reduced tariffs on European products and the lifting of some restrictions on businesses bidding for public procurement contracts".

What this essentially means is that, if this trade deal goes through, Indian workers (highly skilled, like us) will be able to work in any EU country under contract. This will also mean an increase in worth of 3.9 billion pounds a year for the whole European economy, much needed in times of recession.

This also means that, once this deal is through, UK will be bound by this EU agreement and companies in UK will be able to recruit Indian workers in sectors such as information technology, management consultancy and engineering. This would mean bypassing the annual limit of immigration set by the conservative government earlier this year. It will not be a surprise if this deal gets immense criticism and opposition from within UK, as limiting the immigration is one of key promises of this coalltion government.

The mere fact that India can dictate terms to EU/UK, makes me feel good. But a free trade between countries, and free flow of highly skilled workers will always be beneficial for both parties.

The deal is due to be signed in December, and only time will what will be its fate.

Plans for New Year 2011

Dear colleague, Alexander has come up with an idea of going to Kiev for New Years ... Here is the content of his mail.

I’m planning to spend part of Christmas and New Year Eve 2010-2011 holiday in Kiev, Ukraine (however not yet commited).

Some people told me they would be interested to join me. If you’re interested to get to Kiev for New Year Eve 2010-2011 (around 5 days from Dec 29 to Jan 2), please let me know by Sunday next week (17th October).

Background information about Kiev.

Kiev or Kyiv (Ukrainian: Київ [ˈkɪjiw] ( listen); Russian: Киев; Polish: Kijów); (see also Cities' alternative names), is the capital and the largest city of Ukraine, located in the north central part of the country on the Dnieper River. The population as of the 2001 census was 2,611,300. However, higher numbers have been cited in the press.[1]

Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural centre of Eastern Europe. It is home to many high-tech industries, higher education institutions and world-famous historical landmarks. The city has an extensive infrastructure and highly developed system of public transport, including the Kiev Metro. Kiev was classified as a Beta global city as of 2004.

The name Kiev is said to derive from the name of Kyi, one of four legendary founders of the city (brothers Kyi, Shchek, Khoryv, and sister Lybid). During its history, Kiev, one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, passed through several stages of great prominence and relative obscurity. The city may have been founded in the 5th century as a trading post, perhaps part of the land of the early Slavs. It gradually acquired eminence as the centre of the East Slavic civilization, becoming in the tenth to twelfth centuries a political and cultural capital of Rus', a medieval East Slavic state. Completely destroyed during the Mongol invasion in 1240, the city lost most of its influence for the centuries to come. It was a provincial capital of marginal importance in the outskirts of the territories controlled by its powerful neighbours; first the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, followed by Poland and Russia.

The city prospered again during the Russian Empire's industrial revolution in the late 19th century. After the turbulent period following the Russian Revolution of 1917, from 1921 onwards Kiev was an important city of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, and, from 1934, its capital. During World War II, the city again suffered significant damage, but quickly recovered in the post-war years remaining the third largest city of the Soviet Union. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Ukrainian independence of 1991, Kiev remained the capital of Ukraine.

For more information about Kiev, please, visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiev

Approximate budget and costs:

Return flight London-Luton – Kiev (29 Dec 2010, 02 Jan 2011) – £300-£350

Taxi from and to airport (return) – £30.

Hotel in very center of Kiev with amazing view to Central square of the city (***) – £55, single, £72, double or twin)

There are lots of private apartments in the center of the city available for rent which can save up to 50% of the budget.

Taxi in city center is around £3-£4 a ride to almost everywhere.

Public transport – 20p. (price is usually fixed)

Lunch/Diner – £5 on average (up to £15 if you go to a superior restaurant). Ukrainian cuisine is very good and inexpensive.

New Year Eve Diner (£30-£100).

Prices may vary (you know, It’s new year time).

Consular and visa issues:

You don’t need visa to get to Kiev if you’re a citizen of European Union, United States, Canada, Japan or Korea.

This quote is from site of Ukrainian Embassy in the UK:

Ukraine has set visa free regime for citizens of the United States of America since the 1st July 2005, citizens of Canada and Japan since 1st August 2005, citizens of the European Union countries (citizens of Republic of Bulgaria and Romania starting with the 1st January 2008), Swiss Confederation and Liechtenstein since the 1st September 2005, citizens of the Principality of Andorra, Vatican (The Holly See), the Principality of Monaco, the Republic of Iceland, the Kingdom of Norway, the Republic of San Marino since the 1st January 2006, the Republic of Korea.

This regulation establishes visa-free regime of entry Ukraine and transit through its territory for the USA, Canada, Japan, EU (citizens of Republic of Bulgaria and Romania starting with the 1st January 2008), Swiss, Liechtenstein, Andorra, Vatican, Monaco, Iceland, Norway, San Marino, the Republic of Korea passport holders who may stay in Ukraine up to 90 days within 180 days.

MBA journey - Part 1 : the start

And it started, and God, what an start it was. An action packed, hectic orientation week, consisting of parties, sports, and a lot of activities. Had an amazing week. If that was not enough, the party in Friday night was even better. CSA (Cranfield Students Association) has amazing parties on Friday nights. The dance floor was rocking, and a not a single square foot of space to step foot on.

Just when I thought it was going to be over (at 2AM), we moved the party to our kitchen, (at stringfellow) , and it was awesome. Wines, vodka and Rum, and a drinking game. Lot of noise, guitar, shouting, and lots of chaos - all the elements of a party. Celebrating our entry to the world of MBA, the Cranfield experience. The party lasted till 5.30, and then we went to sleep (after eating tortillas with cheese which I dont remember the taste of).

And then the weekend started, which called for a visit to London (to visit my wife), and then came the Sunday, which brought the fun filled week to an end.

India Vs China - revisited

In the wake of the ongoing Commonwealth games 2010, here is a nice article on how India and China are poised as the favorites for investors all over, and how they will fare in the longer term.

I agree with the writers view that India will grow faster than china in the coming few years, and I believe stronger governments at the center can even accelerate this process. If we are able to cross the hurdles of corruption and bureaucracy faster, we can beat China even in its size.

The CWG games ironically, will add a lot of impact to India's GDP (close to 4B USD) in the next 2-3 years and will create close to 2.5 million jobs. (Read economic times article)

http://www.economist.com/node/17147648

A quote - " ..... most foreign investors would probably pick China. The market is bigger, the government easier to deal with, and if your supply chain for manufactured goods does not pass through China your shareholders will demand to know why. But as the global economy becomes more knowledge-intensive, India’s advantage will grow..... "

Thinking of doing an MBA abroad ?

Recently one of my friends from college contacted me for guidance on applying to b-schools. So I thought it to be a good idea to jot them down in this blog, as I know there will be others who would like to have this information.

MBA abroad

Most Indian candidates like me aspire to do an MBA in US or the UK.  Also, since I have done my research (while applying for an MBA myself) only on schools in the US and the UK, I would limit my thoughts on these schools only. There are other very good schools otherwise as well, and I would recommend taking a look at the Financial times rankings, and the Economist Rankings to get the list of top 100 b-schools of the world.

Indian School of Business (ISB) is one of the schools (I think the only one, as IIMs done participate in rankings) that features regularly in FT and Economist Rankings. For Indian aspirants (which are too many), this limits the scope of doing an MBA in India, and so they throng to the b-schools abroad. Well, we do have other b-schools in India, but they are just not up to the mark, and moreover do not guarantee the fat (read USD/GBP/EUR) paycheque which you can dream to get after a foreign MBA.

Also read this post on deciding between doing MBA in India and abroad.

US or UK

Most UK b-schools have 1 year courses. (There are exceptions like London Business School and Manchester Business School. See list of UK b-schools here).  While most US schools have 2 year courses. I suggest everyone to aim for US schools. Reasons are many.I will list a few:

  1. The course is more matured in top US b-schools (top 30, and even in some tier-2 schools), as they have top faculty, diverse fields of experience, and have been in the field for years. Most US schools have intakes of more than 300-400 per year, as they are big schools. Most UK schools have fewer than 100-150 students per year, and most schools are not that matured, and are new.

  2. A 2 year course gives you the opportunity to expand your horizons, switch your function/domain, and also look for internship opportunity (which most of the times gets converted into a full time job). An internship also allows you to earn some money (and valuable experience as well), which in the end lowers your debt. All this is not possible in a 1 year course

  3. The economy lately has revived in the US, as its huge. In the UK, its not so. It might take 2-3 years of more time to get to the same level of 2006-7. Also, apart from a few sectors, like finance/IT, others are not in that shape anyways, as they are in the US. So job opportunities are going to be more in number in the US as compared to the UK.

Let me tell you the scenarios in which you should apply to schools in UK. Unless you fall into any of these categories you should stick to US schools only.

  1. Personal reason - like that of mine - My wife is working here in the UK, and so I could not have thought about any other place than UK.

  2. Previous work experience in UK - If you have worked in the UK earlier, and you have a very good network, and can easily get absorbed in previous company. This reduces your job hinting duration.

  3. If you have more than 10 years of experience, and you want to work in the UK post MBA. Most UK b-schools take students who have more than 5 years of work ex. My class has average work ex of 8 years and the average age of the class is 32-33. So think of how you will fit into the class. US b-schools have avg work-ex in the range of 2-6 typically. (This is the median range, and not the complete range and varies from school to school)

Cost/Finances/Loans

Here is the cost, all inclusive.

US ~~ 165K USD - for 2 years. (varies from school to school)

UK ~~ 85K USD - for 1 year (varies from school to school)

Scholarships/Grants : While applying for b-schools, make sure you make a strong application for grants/scholarships. The schools decide on the basis of a number of factors to decide on your scholarship. Example - your GMAT score, Extra curricular, Volunteer work, Academic background/scores, Achievements, references, application/essays -  virtually everything. Also the amount of scholarship you are offered depends on one thing - how badly the school wants you !. Also it depends on the school's reputation , ranks, and the kind of applications they receive - your profile might fetch you 100% scholarship at Indiana Kelly , but none at Kellogs.  Also keep in mind that most US schools provide scholarships (also in huge number and amounts), while very very few UK schools do so.

Loans : If you are not sure of scholarships, apply in schools which allow loans without a co-signer. (Well, if you have someone in the US which can be a co-signer, nothing better).Indian banks will not give loans more than 2o Lakhs (and that too with a lot of hassle). Well, recently, Credila has started giving loans to students, but check with them first about the amount you are eligible which typically depends on the kind of collateral and guarantor you can produce.

How to apply

Typically, all applications start from July/August. And go on till Feb/March next year. Its always good to start early, as no matter what anyone says, the earlier you apply the better are your chances to get in. Also there is a much brighter chance to get the much needed scholarship. A GMAT score is a must. While many schools also accept GRE scores. In addition you might have to take TOEFL/IELTS for a few schools (only a few). Here are the basic elements of a b-school application. All b-schools expect that you be perfect in all of them.

GMAT preparation

Do not take your GMAT preparation lightly. It not only decides the school you get into, but it also determines the scholarship which you might fetch, and hence lower your overall burden. But do keep in mind that a good GMAT score does not guarantee an admission to any b school. However, a bad GMAT score might be the deterrent, in most of the cases (Unless you have other areas of your profile very strong, because I have heard stories of people getting into Harvard and Stanford with 600 as well).

References

References are a must to submit. Unless otherwise specified you must submit a reference from your immediate manager from your current company (or the previous company, if you have quit recently). Most schools need 2 recommendations, while others ask for 3. You can also provide references from your professors of the last school/college you attended. If you can not manage a reference from your current company, you must explain the reason for the same in your application, and provide alternative recommendations, like from some client/vendor you might have worked with. If you also work in an NGO or sorts, its sometimes good to include a recommendation from such people as well. Remember, that b-schools want to know about you as a person, more than what your resume or application or degrees say. Also remember that whats written in the letter of recommendation matters more than who writes the recommendation. Here are a few other points to be taken care of while submitting letter of recommendations.

  1. Do not write your own letter of recommendation, and ask your referee to just submit it. Believe me, the readers who go through the application go through such applications daily, and they will know by the way of writing, that you have written it. Moreover, there are chances that you will miss some points , if you access yourself.

  2. If you want, you can write the basic qualities of yourself, or a basic skeleton/format which you want your referee to follow. But not everything. Make sure s/he adds his own points.

  3. Make sure each LOR (letter of recommendation) focuses on your different qualities, and not on the routine things like hard working, good leader, blah blah...

  4. Make sure you ask your recommend-er to add a few personal qualities, other than technical/business skills.

  5. Make sure you submit in time. Also make sure you remind your referees, and give them enough time to submit. (Typically 4 weeks). Most recos are to be submitted online, or to be sent via their official email ids. Make sure you find the process of providing recommendations beforehand, and have a meeting early to discuss everything.

  6. If you are applying to a large number of schools, make sure your referee is OK to that, as it might be overwhelming, and the same LOR might not be usable everywhere.(Different Schools follow their own way, some accept essay type LORs, some have questionnaires etc.).

Application/Essays

Most b-schools ask candidates to write 5-6 essays (including SOPs, job profile, resume etc) which forms the major part of the application (which are mostly - 75% - online). Points to be taken care of while writing essays:

  1. Be Original. Do not copy.

  2. You are free to refer to any book you want (there are numerous books in the market) - but do not make the mistake of copying from them. You must read them to get an idea of what is accessed as part of the application essays, because only them you will be able to produce an essay that appeals to the readers.

  3. Make sure you distinguish yourself from others. Especially if you are an Indian, IT, male. Remember, you will be among the majority who apply to b-schools in the US and the UK. How do you make sure that your application stands out than the others, because almost all of them will contain the similar job profile as yours, similar work experiences, similar college backgrounds, and so and so. Example - of something that stands out  - will be  -  something extra curricular if you have done ,and that too achieved something which only a few could do.

  4. Stick to the word limits.

This is a must. And you must provide examples of some extra curricular activities you have participated (preferably, led if its some NGO, or won if it was some competition). Make sure you also provide the reasons of your participation in such activities (like why do you love hiking/painting etc) , and how does it show a different perspective of your personality. Also make sure you point out your achievements, and not just what you have participated in.

Note: If you have minimal ECs, try indulging in one now. Like join a campaign, a NGO, or start doing something new. And don't worry, if asked, be true to yourself, and explain how you never got time to participate in one, or never got (or knew) what you liked, and you wish to continue doing it more some time more. Being truthful is more fruitful than telling a bunch of lies.

Academics

Well, this is what it is, and you can not help it. What scores you got in your engineering or BCom is un-changeable. (If you are still in some school , and work hard as the grades matter).

But, you do get to explain your lower grades (lower than average), if you want to. You could write it in one of your essays (if there is no separate essay for this one), or you could provide this in some appondix/additional information section.

Interviews

Interviews are often the last stages, and many schools conduct 1-2 interviews before which a final decision is made on acceptance/Scholarship etc. Many schools conduct telephonic interviews as well, while others conduct them via some alumni, or during some MBA fair or similar. Be prepared to be asked on your application/resume/essays in your interview. Its a time to blow your trumpet and let them know that you were the person who wrote them all, and not some other guy whom you paid.

Hope it Helps. Happy Hunting

Visiting Scotland ?

No, I am not visiting Scotland. But may be some time in future. Noting down a few things pointed out by Probuddha , fellow Cranfield admit.

Anyone planning for scotland , and intrested in landscape scenery make sure you visit Isle of Skye.
Other than edinburgh and the whiskey experience, Isle of skye is a must for scenery/photography lovers. 'Lochness' seems dab after
visiting skye Parts of Lord of the rings  was shot in skye --  'Uig' is the village.
Stay at 'skye backpackers' . at gbp 15  per night per person, it far exceeds any other hotel/ cottage priced at >35gbp in terms of
cleaniness and location
People into whiskey must pay pilgrimage to the talisker distillery at carbost, skye (not to be confused with the talisker village in skye).
the guided tour is about an hour and you can enjoy free samples after the tour :)

If driving, A80 from skye, lochlass and glassgow is fantastic.

Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix - Misses

Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix - Misses
I am a big fan of Harry Potter, have read all the books numerous times and watched the movies numerous times as well. I like to read a particular book and then watch the movie to understand how the directors take out the best parts of the books and put it in a 2 - 3 hour movie. I believe the job is really tough. The author of the book might also be required to ensure that the movie has covered all the important parts for the sequel to be released and understood by the movie public.
Harry Potter, for those who do not yet know him, is a young wizard, a Boy who survived the killing curse of The Dark Lord Voldermort. Hogwarts is the school of magic where ....

http://ruddhi-travelogue.blogspot.com/2010/07/pick-your-own-crop-and-fruits-garsons.html

. ... drove from Farnborough to Esher to a place named as ‘Garsons’. They have a huge farm where a lot of crops and fruits are grown. They have an excellent range of vegetables variety from cauliflower and beans to green peas and potatoes. They also grow fruits– Strawberries, Gooseberries, Blackcurrant, Raspberries, Blackberries, Cherries and a lot more. The farm grows 5 types of flowers. Here, you can handpick the fruits and vegetables that you want, and take them home (obviously at a price), though its still fun to pick what you want. ....

Interim CAP on Tier-1 and Tier-2 Visas for UK implemented

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/newsfragments/27-intro-limit-for-t1-pbs

Few highlights:

1. A total of 5400 Tier-1 visas will be issued, equally divided into monthly installments, from July 2010 till April 2011. The limit will be a little low in July (318 to be precise), but will be 635 for remaining months from Aug till March 2011.

2. Quoted from UKBA site - "The UK Border Agency will operate the system on a first come first served basis with a limit placed on the number of Tier 1 General Visa applications considered in any one month. If an application is submitted after the limit for a month is reached, the application will be held and considered in the following months limit. Applications will continue to be accepted during the period in which the limit has been reached; however the UKBA will not process the application until the next month. Applications will be held in a queue by order of the date on which they were received. Applications in the queue will be processed when the following month's limit is opened. If application numbers look as though they will exceed the total limit for the whole of the interim period, the UKBA will notify the individual at the time of application. Details of waiting time will be announced on the UK Border Agency Website."

3. Those already in UK in another immigration category will not be included in this limit. (Good news !) . So those who want to switch to PSW, or from Tier-2 will be exempt from this limit. Reason being, the rationale behind all this is to limit immigration, and since these people have already migrated, no point in limiting them.

4. However, the points needed for Tier-1 will go up from 95 (75 for age/income/uk exp/education+ 10 for english language + 10 for maintenance) to 100 now !!! Might be a little difficult who just managed to get only 95. This applies for all Tier-1 applicants, even those who are switching from Tier-2 or Tier-4 (to PSW)

5. UKBA expects that the overall applications and visa issued should be on the same levels as last year, as during the same period around 5000 visas were issues. However, the number might go down because of increase in required points.

6. It is estimated that, if assuming applications fall in line with the fall in Tier 1 and 2 grants, UKBA fee income would drop by £920,000. The range here is £510,000 per annum in the lower scenario and £1,320,000 per annum in the upper scenario;

UK to impose annual cap on immigrants from non-EU countries

A move, that is likely to affect highly skilled workers from non-EU countries of which Indians make the major chunk, the UK government is ready to announce an annual cap on such workers.

Its going to be 24,100 for the period starting July 2010 till April 2011, when they want to finalize a permanent CAP. Well, it remains to be seen whether this will actually be implemented, as there has been a lot of opposition from industry and schools that hire and enroll a lot of fee-paying students from non-EU countries.

The economic times says - "However, the proposed annual cap is expected to face opposition from British companies struggling to recruit employees with the right skills. Campaign groups such as the Highly Skilled Migrants Forum have already announced that they will oppose such limits."

Personally, I fear this move. But since the CAP is just a 5% reduction in the number of migrants that came last year its nothing to worry. Real worry could be when next year, in April 2011 if they go on to reduce the number even lower. Getting a Tier-1 Visa would be then like winning a lottery. (As it happens when applying for H1 Visa to work in the US).

If that is not enough, there are talks of implementing bonds for students who come for education, which they need to pay for studying and will get it back only if they return.

I think this is CAP will just be temporary, and can not remain for long. As it is UK is having shortage of highly skilled workers. This seems to me as a knee-jerk reaction, and nothing else. What this move also serves is a fulfillment of promise made during elections. Come April 2011, when the move will be reviewed, it could be taken back.  Remember what happened to the eligibility rules for Tier-1 in April 2010. First they changed the point based system (PBS) for Tier-1 to allow just masters degree holders to come to the UK in 2009 and then rolled it back in 2010 as they surely found no good in that. Well, that was the non-conservative government at that time, but I believe things will change as economy also recovers during early next year.

The Hindu says - "Leading British businesses are opposed to an artificial limit arguing that it would make it difficult for them to recruit the necessary skilled staff and damage the economy. Universities, who depend on fee-paying foreign students as the main source of their income, are also strongly opposed to such rigid restrictions."

Book Review : New Moon - The twilight saga

http://ruddhi-travelogue.blogspot.com/2010/06/new-moon-twilight-saga-continues.html

Twilight saga is the story where all legends of vampires and werewolves become true. New Moon – The second part of the Twilight saga, is the story about the budding friendship between Bella and Jacob, the story where Bella finally meets the deadly royal vampires – Volturri. I liked this book the same as Twilight one, and here is a small synopsis of what the book has to offer.

Whats with these Vampire Movies and Books

Read a nice review of the first book of Twilight Saga here -  http://ruddhi-travelogue.blogspot.com/2010/06/twilight-book-review.html

I suddenly see a sudden burst of vampire books and movies in the market. Especially the Twilight saga. And the movies have been a huge hit, especially with the ladies.

My wife has read the books twice and watched the movies (Twilight and New Moon, waiting for the third one eagerly) numerous times, even the CDs have got scratches I believe.

Riding on vampire wave, other books on vampires and werewolves have also got some publicity, as I see a lot of them in display at Crossword and also at road-side book stalls. Not to mention the prices at roadside stalls, which have increased a lot , especially for these book.s

Me too have started liking the movie - Twilight, after watching it twice. Not a big fan of the book, as I dread reading a fiction novel.

Do read the book and share your comments.

Whats with Bangalore and Juice Joints ?

No where else in India have I seen so many juice shops, as many as I have seen in Bangalore. You have a juice junction, juice stop, or a juice bar in every street you go (and I might not even be exaggerating). I somehow can not comprehend the reason for this, could be the sudden upsurge of young people with disposable income, but I hear that the juice 'culture' , as I call it, has been there for long.

Bangalore is not a place with hot weather that you need juices to replenish your body fluids so often. And neither is Bangalore a place where we have fruit orchards, and neither is fruit cheap. If at all, fruits are costliest, if you compare with metros and other comparable cities (like Pune, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Ahmadabad) in India.

And neither is Bangalore a place for health freaks. Most denizens here are, in fact, obese people working in IT/ITES/BT/Govt sector and are mostly KFC/McD crunching junta. Don't believe me ? Just go at any McD and see yourself, you will find more crowd than in a juice shop.

So, whats the reason ?

I think it has more to do with the culture than anything else. People in Bangalore have been consuming juices more than at other places and the same continues. Well, this is my theory and I would believe so. When I came to Bangalore 5 years back, I was told Bangalore is famous for fresh fruits and juices.

Another theory could be the status of juice in the society now. Its a 'cult' . You see a juice shop and you are tempted to have a juice. Most juice shops display the fruits (or at least the posters) , some even hang them on the pavement to attract passers-by.And one is sure to be tempted. Add to this the pulling factor when the juice shop is crowded with people sipping juice/milk-shakes/ice-creams/custards etc. Money is no concern, as I believe, you will find millions of people with disposable incomes here in Bangalore. Also the juice does not normally cost much (6-7 rs for small glass, and 10-15 for a large).

I , in fact, remember falling to this cult culture some 5 years back, when I came here. There is a juice shop (not surprising) on the way to office, and every time I passed by, I was sure to have one glass for sure. Yes, I agree, I was tempted by the fruits hanging all over, and also I liked the taste. I was also lured into trying new fruits which I never tried before like 'butter-fruit', 'musk-melon' et al. Not that its bad to have juices, but for arguments sake, I fell into it and realized why the juice thing is a Big business here and having juice a cult.

Movie : Rajneeti

http://ruddhi-travelogue.blogspot.com/2010/06/rajneeti-movie-review.html

Watched this movie last weekend. Loved the first half but did not like the way it was getting stretched till the end. Prakash Jha could have done better. The star cast was awesome with stalwarts like Naseerudin Shah, Ajay Devgan, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpei and new ones like Ranbir, Katrina and Arjun Rampal.

The story was good and could have been better had there been a little less killings.

Loved a few dialogues though, the ones by Bajpei -

"Karara Jawaab Milega"

"Rajneeti me murdo ko gada nahin karte, unko jinda rakhte hain taaki waqt aney pe wo  bole"

3 requirements for a startup success

Watch this video on venturebeat about the three necessities for a startup success. Especially a tech startup.

http://entrepreneur.venturebeat.com/2010/05/28/three-necessities-for-start-up-success/

A small abstract:

- Is there a new market ? Or is there a potentially new market that can be created because of some technological or economic change.

- Essentially, new companies need not exist or need not be created. When starting a new company think about why you think its needed. What is wrong with the current companies that are doing the same or similar things that you need a new one. Because if a market exists then customers are more than happy to continue with same old companies and would unlikely switch.

- So if there is going to be a change, which you foresee, might be because of some technological advancement or economic change or both, how big is the change. Will it create a new market. Will it bring about a 10X change ?

- Think about 10x factor - always think about how fast, how better, how different your product will be than the existing one. Will it be 10x ? A VC might not be interested if its not around 10X.

Entrepreneurs ...

Entrepreneurs aren't born , they are made.

An Entrepreneur is somebody who jumps out of the airplane without a parachute in the hope that he will get some help on the way.

Funny ? Its true and that's the reason only a few take the actual plunge.

Is it the end of the passport size photo ?

Recently visited the Passport Seva Kendra, or PSK as it is now called in Bengaluru. And its modern. TCS has been awarded some 1000 crores for a project to modernize and e-fy passport offices all over India. Bengaluru and Chandigarh are the two places where this project has been implemented to start with. Expectation is to have swift process for passport application which takes a lot of time thanks to erstwhile manual process of application, police verification (which remains but is swift, as claimed) etc.

So coming to the point of passport size photo, you do not need a photograph to be provided with your application while applying for a passport. They have digital cameras which capture your picture, quite hassle free. I had a similar experience at RTO bangalore where I did not have to provide a passport size photo.

This simply means that you no longer need the ubiquitous passport size photo. Well, it is still needed in some cases like when applying for loans, sim card etc but the actual meaning of the photo - 'passport' size will be soon gone.

So will the name need be changed ? Think of it some 100 years from now, will there be an entity called passport photo ? If yes, we will be there to tell tales of how the paper passport photo was taken over by digital photos.

Not to forget the fate of photo studios which survive on passport photos. They might move into other businesses or offer other services like marriage photography, etc ( A lot of them already do this along with regular passport photo business )

Is an MBA really worth it ?

A few months back I wrote a post on "Pros and Cons of doing an MBA" . Now that I have chosen to join a b-school I thought it would be better to revisit and find out more.

In fact, during the interview I had with Sean Rickard from Cranfield, I had asked this precise question - "Is an MBA really worth it ?". Sean answered by saying that an MBA is not a must to succeed. Richard Branson and many other successful businessmen are not MBAs, but they do recruit MBAs. So doing an MBA does improve your chances to succeed.

After doing a little re-thinking, I have found that the most compelling reason for me to do an MBA, is to get out of my comfort zone. This is true, as I have found how anxious I have been in the last couple of years to do something different and do something which interests me. And I think doing an MBA will be the starting of all these things that I want to do.Agree, I will have a loan (not so huge though) to pay off at the end of it, but I think I will be just fine.

Also, since its an international MBA, I think the exposure will be different and probably better. It will be an experience of a different kind. And I am quite excited about it. Also I expect the MBA course to transform me, to a different and more competitive person. And if it really happens, I think it will be really worth it.

How my Loan Application reached HSBC, Milton Keynes, UK

Sent my application for post graduate loan via DHL on friday, the 14th. And it got delivered today, on 17th. Really express service, considering it was a weekend in between. But I believe DHL works 365*24*7.

Here is the whole trail of how my shipment traveled from Bangalore to the UK. And you can clearly (or is it too obscure ?), it took less than 72 hours.

Can't see it ? Click on the image to view full version. (Could not make it look better)

Now keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully it will be approved.

The Big Question : Tier-1 or Tier-4

Tier-1 (G) - Erstwhile HSMP visa. This is the most popular and sought after visa which is needed for working in the UK. Most employers do prefer this visa over others like Tier-2 etc.

Tier-4 (Students) - Students visa for studying in the UK. One gets a Tier-1(PSW) to work post study.

I am eligible for Tier-1(G) visa now (based on points calculator). But a Tier-1(G) visa is meant for employment purpose only. Likewise a Tier-4 visa is only for study purposes. So while technically I might be able to stay and study on Tier-1, its not 'appropriate', and if UK home office finds any such irregularities, I might be in trouble. Before making any decision, I would like to get a clarification (written permission will be best) from the UK Immigration Home Office, details of which can find here - UK Border Agency | Home Page . Even if its allowed, I find the following cons of studying on Tier-1.

  • Note that one needs to pay the council tax (which is waived for students) when you stay in the UK on tier-1. So this will be another overhead.

  • Tier-1 is valid for initial 2 years only and can be extended for further 3 years, given that you show enough earnings in the last one year. So consider the case where you are studying on Tier-1, where you wont be earning for the first year, and then if it takes another 3-4 months to find job, you will just be left with 8-9 months to show earnings for, and which might not be enough (of course if you get a FAT salary, 6 months might be more than enough) to accumulate those earnings to get the needed points. (25K GBP for 5 points, and atleast 30K GBP for 15 points)

While if I go with Tier-4 (students) and then convert to Tier-1 (PSW) later on, which can be done within a month of completing studies, I would be well off. I heard that some employers do prefer Tier-1(G) visa holders, but Tier-1-PSW should be good as well. Again hoping that the economy recovers a little and jobs start appearing.

Refer to my previous post on Tier-1 related information.

Thinking of creating a website ? - think minimalistic

If you are thinking of creating a website, or a webpage you must be wondering how should you format your page to fill in with the 'right' amount of information without making it too cluttered. I know its easier said than done. No design is perfect and we (web designers, sometimes I like to call myself this name, I find it fancy ;)) keep on tweaking our designs, re ordering content, and resizing divs.

Here is a very good guide on how to create good web pages. Its based on "minimalistic" idea of creating web pages.

http://www.skelliewag.org/a-guide-to-creating-a-minimalist-website-63.htm

Minimalization is the 'art' of making a web page look un cluttered. There should be enough white space between sections to space things apart. Also there should not be more content than whats required. A picture speaks a thousand words, and its best to put a picture than writing a content, as it saves real estate and speaks volumes without making the visitor go through it (believe me , not many like to read everything).

Everyone has his own definition to minimalism. To me, minimalism means tending towards the google home page.

'Always aim to be different from your crowd' is another idea behind this theory as well. Every other site now a days is crowded with flash , images, widgets and so on. A site with clear and clean look stands out anytime.

Believe me, thats why I like wordpress better than blogger.

If you build something of value, the money will find you.

Often startups keep running for venture funding and scrap their plans for lack of funding. But, truth to be told, as in this article , less than 10% of startups receive any kind of funding. Which means only 1 out of 10. So what happens to the rest 9 out of 10. Do they die ? Not necessarily.

Getting a funding does not mean that your business will succeed and similarly, not getting a fund does not mean that you are doomed to fail. A lot of successful entrepreneurs have started their business and made them running using their own personal finances. Its often a very good idea to look for external funding only when you have a stable product built, and its ready to be sold/marketed.

But, how many of us do have that amount of time and money to experiment. Believing in an idea and sacrificing for it holds good only for some time. After that, you run out of patience and also money. Not to mention friends who tend to drift apart.

But I think those who can get through this period of trying, and keep similar-minded friends close are the ones who succeed. And then when you are successful in doing whatever you started with, say building a product, making it sell-able, money will follow you.

email id is your unique identification

Everything in the world of internet revolves around your email-id. Its a unique identification for you, a passport. Want to enter a site, want to view some details, want to make some friends, just enter your email id and you are through. I don't even remember a lot of sites where I have registered my email-id. Well, thats a different thing altogether, but the point is - the email id opens your door to many things on the internet.

I took my email-id lightly, especially when I created it, in 2003 after I got an invite to open a gmail account. Well, the email-service has been phenomenal since then and so has been its usage. But, more importantly its importance has grown over time. A lot can be attributed to how good it has been.I wonder if this has been as lousy as xxdiff-mail or yahxx-mail would I be still using it ? Well, again, that's a different issue altogether.

I now have more than 10 Gigs of data in my gmail account, discounting pics uploaded to picasa, and files uploaded to google docs. I even have bought 25 Gigs of extra space from google in case I run short of memory (which I already have because of the huge volumes of pics I have, thanks to my DSLR). My email id manages everything for me in my life. It holds all the information I need and keeps me updated with latest information via digest mails, email subscriptions and numerous other such emails.

Talking about importance, it now has a very important role in my life. It is the same id with which I am registered to GMAC, who manage my GMAT score. Its the same id with which I have applied to a lot of b-schools to whom I applied, and its the 'official' id for communication with the b-school I am going to join. Its the same email id with which I manage my mutual funds portfolio, and also my social presence via twitter, facebook and ning.  I didn't realize when did this personal/un-official email id of mine became official for many purposes.

And I hate to admit but its difficult to part away with this id now. No day passes by when I don't check my mails. When I do not have a computer, I am busy on my mobile, and I hate it when I do not get a network to connect to gmail. Its addictive, and why not, its part of me now.It uniquely identifies me .

My email is me is my email.

Updates : April 25-May 05′ 2010

Well, haven't written anything in this blog since a long time. A lot happened this week and the last, and thought of sharing it in a digest.

Loan Application ready: Collected the documents required for applying for psot-graduate loan from HSBC, UK. Need to send them asap, so that I am visa ready. Inquired Blue-Dart and it will cost 2000 approx to send them to UK. Whhooopping amount, I think

Decision form and initial deposit: Had a demand draft of 3000 made in favor of Cranfield University for the initial deposit. Will send it across with the decision form to the university. Bunch of people (3 actually) have decided to club these and send them in one courier to save on courier costs. Nice idea ! Should be done in a few days time.

Saw a bunch of movies -

- The Prestige - Starring Christian Bale, Scarlett Johansson, Hugh Jackman, Michael Caine. Amazing movie, amazing drama, mystery and thriller. Rated 8.4 in IMDB and ranks at #72 in the top 250 movies of all times.

- Syriana - Starring George Clooney, Matt Damon.  Based on the Arab oil industry and the global politics/crime surrounding it.

- The Transporter-3 - Watched it for the 3rd time. Good pastime at dinner time.

World T20 in Caribbeans

Why do they have to play the world T20 in the Caribbeans. I know they have some good beaches, the people love cricket and its peaceful. But yes, that's the whole point I am trying to make, its way too peaceful. The grounds are small, crowds are well no crowds, and there is no noise. Bring it to the subcontinent and we will make a show of it. ICC will earn a lot more if its played here in BCCI's backyard. I know West-Indies cricket needs some redemption, but ICC will have enough money to pay them off as well and bring them out of their dire straits.

Another reason for not playing in Caribbeans is their low scoring grounds. They are detrimental for T20 if not for 50 over games. To be honest, I didn't like the World Cup in 2007 which was played there. Well, India not making it to super-8 was another BIG (read very BIG) reason. But you have to agree, slow and low scoring pitches will kill the interest.

Not to mention the timings in which the games are going to be played. India matches might be played in times that suite viewers in India, but there are a few matches which will be played when its wee hours in India. The telecaster (ESPN and CO) are going to be at loss for sure.

Well, now that its being played here, I cant say anything but start watching it and love it. Lets hope Dhoni's boys make it again as they did in the rainbow nation in 2007.

Who will be the next Champions ? I think one of India, Pakistan and Sri-Lanka will lift the trophy this time. See for yourself, in 2007 India beat Pakistan to win it. In 2009, Pakistan beat SL to win it, which goes to show the fire-power the three countries from the subcontinent have. Its the IPL as well which will help in giving the boys a confidence. Other than Pakistan, almost every player from SL and India played and had match practice in the IPL.

But do not leave out Bangladesh, another neighbor and Zimbabwe the underdogs who have won both their warm-up games in the build up to the WT20 upsetting Australia.

I think this time the WT20 will be fun, more fun than last time.

When to take the plunge ?

When I say plunge, I mean taking a plunge to start one's own business. I have seen a lot of people who have done it, and still more who want to do it. But most of them are what they call "arm-chair entrepreneurs", those who sit cozy in their homes and just think about doing big things, but do not actually take the plunge.

So what stops someone from taking the plunge. The reasons are many and very common and known to all (I call them 3 Fs : Family, Facility, Funds). I wont repeat them here.

What I have observed is that the reasons for taking the plunge are very similar, a passion to start something of one's own and take it further. A zeal to become the next Ambani or Nilekani. Apart from the common reasons, I have observed other very common reasons among these real entrepreneurs. Let me talk about a few of them.

1. Exposure : I think this is the most important and common to all. Most people whom I have seen starting of their own have done so because of some exposure or the other to a kind of environment where you are encouraged to think unique and achieve higher. The kind of college one goes to is one such environment. The fact that most of the entrepreneurs I have seen have some connection or the other from IIT/IIM is no coincidence. Also the company you are in. Literally and otherwise. Many start-ups have been started by ex employees of Yahoo, Oracle and Amazon. (Must be true of start-ups from other industries as well)

2. Knowledge (or lack of) : Its not about how much you already know, its about how you can achieve and gain further knowledge. Most people I have met did not know much about the business they got into when they started. If they had waited to gain the 'appropriate' knowledge, as most of us do,they would not have started ever. Fact is, we think we should have at-least the threshold value of skills/knowledge before we can make a plunge, and as we grow in maturity and experience, with the amount of knowledge, the threshold increases as well. So it is kind of chasing a constantly moving target.

3. Funds : Most of us think that we can not start a business without Funds. This is partly true. We need funds, but we need ideas first. Funds are the last thing to be worried about. If we have an idea and the passion we can get the funds needed. There are ways.  Might sound more philosophical than practical, but its true. One must not think about funds to start with.

Now to answer the question (When to take the plunge?) - The answer is NOW. If anytime is the right time, it is now.

What about me ? Well, I am going to do it as well. I did a lot of thinking myself. Was engaged in a lot of personal issues (I also have my own excuses) but now after doing an year long of thinking, I am taking the plunge. To start with I will be doing an MBA and then will be starting of my own. I did some work in a start-up in the last 1.5 years and I think an MBA will give me the time and knowledge to think about what went wrong and what can be done more in that.
